Addressing Misdirected Priorities: A CALL FOR JUSTICE and YOUTH EMPOWERMENT

Addressing Misdirected Priorities: A CALL FOR JUSTICE and YOUTH EMPOWERMENT

Of recent, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been targeting students in Nigerian institutions, such as Kwara State University (KWASU) and Federal University of Agriculture, Abẹ́òkúta (FUNAAB), under the guise of combating fraud. This approach not only misses the mark but also perpetuates injustice by ignoring the real perpetrators of financial crimes – the affluent big men and politicians who have amassed wealth through corrupt means.

It is disheartening to witness young minds, the future of our nation, being harassed and stigmatized while the true architects of corruption roam free. Instead of targeting vulnerable students, the EFCC should redirect its focus towards holding accountable those individuals who have systematically pillaged our nation's resources for their own gain.

A society thrives when its leaders prioritize the well-being and empowerment of its youth. By creating opportunities and investing in education, skills training, and entrepreneurship, we can foster a generation of responsible and productive citizens. When the youth are neglected and marginalized, they are forced to resort to desperate measures to survive, perpetuating a cycle of poverty and crime.

It is imperative that the EFCC reassesses its strategies and ensures that justice is served impartially and equitably. Let us build a nation where every citizen, regardless of status or background, has the opportunity to thrive and contribute positively to society. This is not only a matter of fairness but also a fundamental principle of nation-building.

CULTIVATING A THINK DAY RITUAL

A monthly ritual can have a positive impact on you.

History of The Think Day:

In the 1980s, Microsoft founder Bill Gates began an annual tradition he called the Think Week.

Gates would seclude himself in a remote location, shut off all of his communication, and spend an entire week dedicated to reading, learning, and thinking.

The radical approach became an essential part of his process:

"Think Week is a time when I can be creative and push my own thinking. It's a time to step outside the day-to-day demands of my job and really focus on the big picture." - Bill Gates

I first read about the Think Week a few years ago and immediately knew I wanted to give it a shot.

While I knew I didn't have an entire week to dedicate to it (due to early career demands, family priorities, etc.), I figured I could adapt something with a similar core ethos and vision.

The Think DAY was my creation:

Pick one day each month (or quarter) to step back from all of your day-to-day professional demands.

The ground rules:

• Seclude yourself (mentally or physically).
• Shut off all of your notifications on your devices.
• Put up an out-of-office response.

The goal is to spend the entire day reading, learning, journaling, and THINKING.

By doing this, you force yourself to create the free time to zoom out, open your mind, and think creatively about the bigger picture.

My essential tools for Think Day:

• Journal and pen.
• Books/articles I've been wanting to read.
• Secluded location (at home, Airbnb, or outside).
• Thinking question prompts to spark my mind.

Six thinking question prompts I have found particularly useful (that you should steal!):

1. What are your strongest beliefs? What would it take for you to change your mind on them?

2. What are a few things that you know now that you wish you knew 5 years ago?

3. How can you do less, but better?

4. Are you hunting antelope (big important problems) or field mice (small urgent problems)?

5. What actions were you engaged in 5 years ago that you cringe at today? What actions are you engaged in today that you will cringe at in 5 years?

6. What would your 80-year-old self say about your decisions today?

I aim for an 8-hour window (typical 9-5 day) split into 60-minute focus blocks with walks in between.

You have to slow down to speed up.

In a world obsessed with speed, the benefits of slowing down are extensive:

• Restore your energy
• Notice things you previously missed
• Be more deliberate with actions
• Focus on the highest leverage opportunities
• Move slow to move fast.

The Think Day can help. Give it a shot and let me know what you think.

17 WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

Our mental health is very important to our well-being. Most of the time, we easily ignore it and we live on autopilot without taking time to slowdown, pause to ask ourselves if we are in good shape.

mhealth

A life on autopilot is very exhausting, debilitating and unhappy. In other to live a happy life I have identified 17 ways to help improve our mental health and help us live a happy and self-confidence life.

1.  MEDITATION

Meditation has been one of the most recommended ways to improve the mental health. It helps us to tune into our inner thoughts and emotions.

Advice: take 30 minutes every day to meditate either by silent meditation or by a guided mediation.

2.  PRACTICE GRATITUDE

Being grateful at every time does not only improve the mental health but it improves the physical health. There is always bliss, joy and peace for a grateful heart.

Advice: practice sending gratitude messages to at least 5 people every day before going to bed.

3.  LEARN TO SAY NO!

Do not say Yes! when you mean to say No! Most of us are guilty of always saying YES! on occasions where we genuinely mean to say NO! just to please people. Saying NO is actually not a bad thing to do. Putting yourself and needs first is not selfish but healthy.

4.  START EVERY DAY WITH A POSITIVE AFFIRMATION

Starting your day with a positive sentence like today, I am worthy of love, happiness, I am going to let things beyond my control slide, you will find out you’ve set an undefeatable tone and feeling for your day.

5.  PRACTICE SELF-CARE

Self-care does not necessarily need to be expensive. It can be as simple as just doing things that make you happy and at peace.

6.  TAKE A SOCIAL MEDIA BREAK

Disengaging from the social media is a big challenge for many of us. Our attention is focused on happening on social media. Taking a break off the social media for at least 24hrs a week will have a positive impact on our mental health.

7.  EMBRACE AN HOBBY

Often practicing of am hobby you find joy, solace in will help strengthen and improve the mental health.

8.  EXERCISE

Exercise as simple as taking a walk of 15 minutes or jogging will help improve the mental health.

9.  COMPLAIN LESS

Too much of complain will only lead our mind to focus majorly on negative things which will in turn drain us our strength, inner peace and mental health.

10.     COMPLIMENT AND CONGRATULATE YOURSELF

Before you sleep every day, list out what you love about yourself that day and compliment them and congratulate yourself for effectively using them to improve yourself that day.

11.     EAT HEALTHY AND DRINK LOT OF WATER

Eating healthy meal, fruits and drinking at least 10 glasses of water will keep the mental and physical health in good shape.

Advice: Breakfast is very essential.

12.     DO SOMETHING NICE FOR SOMEONE EVERY DAY.

13.     ASKING FOR HELP DOES NOT MAKE YOU A LESSER PERSON.

Whenever we feel overwhelmed, let’s not let fear or shame stop us from asking for help.

14.     JOURNALING.

Learning to write our thoughts and feelings is a great tool that can help us achieve self-discovery and connect to our deeper self.

15.     PUSH YOURSELF OUT OF  YOUR COMFORT ZONE

One of the best way to fight anxiety is by taking action and boldly face the things that scares you, in that way, you will see that they aren’t as scary as you thought it would be.

16.     ALWAYS PUT YOURSELF FIRST

Living to please other people and taking our needs for granted is the easiest thing for us to do. Each day, put your needs first, listen to what you want and remind yourself that you also deserve to come first.

17.     REFLECT ON WHAT YOU’VE LEARNT TODAY.

Ask yourself about what the day thought you. Did the lesson of the day challenge you? Should you continue with the same routine?
