France's first Republican presidential primary has ended in surprise

France President
(CNN)France's first Republican presidential primary has ended in a surprising runoff between two former prime ministers and halted a political comeback by former President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Sarkozy came in third in the field of seven vying for the nomination for France's center-right party.
The shock winner was Francois Fillon, who staged a remarkable late surge to win the vote.

He'll contest Alain Juppe in a second-round vote for the party's nomination on November 27.
It's assumed the winner will be the one to contest the leader of the far-right National Front, Marine Le Pen, for the presidency.

Le Pen's anti-Europe and anti-immigration stance has been gaining popularity among French voters, and in an interview with CNN last week, she said she'd been emboldened by Donald Trump's recent victory in the United States.

It "makes the French realize that what the people want, they can get, if they mobilize themselves," she said.
With more than three-quarters of polling places reporting, Fillon had around 44% of the vote followed by Juppe with about 28%.

Sarkozy brought in 20% and said in a concession tweet, "I wish the best for my country and for the one who will have to lead the France that I love -- NS"

In a concession speech, Sarkozy said he will support the 62-year-old Fillon in the runoff.

Who is Fran Fillon?

Fillon, 62, is a lawyer who served as Sarkozy's prime minister between 2007 and 2012.
As a Catholic from Le Mans, a village in north-west France, he symbolizes the traditional provincial right. Fillon aims to end the 35-hour work week, cut public spending, abolish the wealth tax, reduce immigration and invest 12 billion euros in security, defense and justice.

Just a few weeks ago, Fillon was considered an unlikely bet for the presidency but won over voters with a polished performance in televised debates.

He apparently also struck the right tone on the fight against fdasdfasdfIslamist terrorism and ISIS after publishing a new book called "Beating Islamic Totalitarianism."
After his win, Fillon tweeted a message to the French electorate.

"I thank the French people who supported me and I send a message of respect and coming together to the other voters."

Who is Alain Juppe?

Juppe, 71, is the current mayor of Bordeaux who also served as prime minister from 1995 to 1997 under President Jacques Chirac.

He's considered a moderate who promises to promote a "happy national identity" if he comes to power.

Juppe has also promised economic reform, effective border control within and outside Europe, an end to the 35-hour work week, and more investment in security and the fight against terrorism.

Because of the unpopularity of President Francois Hollande's socialist party, the Republican nominee will likely face Le Pen in the final round of the presidential race in May.

Leader of the National Front since 2011, Le Pen is a fierce euroskeptic who has said there would be no place for multiculturalism if she took power.

Tinubu gots my full respect - Fayemi

Bola Ahmed Tinubu
Former Gov. of Ekiti state, Dr Fayemi has reiterated his respect for APC national leader, Asiwaju Tinubu saying he will always hold him in high esteem.

The Minister for Solid Minerals Development, Dr Kayode Fayemi has debunked a report in which he allegedly blamed Asiwaju Bola Tinubu for the APC leader's 'misfortunes.'

In several tweets and a statement sent by his media aide, Olayinka Olabode, Fayemi debunked the story saying he remains loyal to Tinubu.
He further stressed that the bond between Fayemi and the APC national leader dates back to decades of cordial relationship.

In his words: "The general public is hereby urged to disregard a false report with headline : "Tinubu as a leader is responsible for his misfortunes, says Fayemi". The highly mischievous and malicious report is nothing but a tissue of lies.

"It must be stressed that Dr Kayode Fayemi never granted any interview where he made disparaging comments about the person of our highly revered leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
"Dr Fayemi subscribes to the highest moral and ethical standard of the Yoruba and as such would not speak evil or seek to demean Asiwaju Tinubu or any of our respected leaders under no circumstance whatsoever.

"For the avoidance of doubt, Dr Fayemi has always held and will continue to hold Asiwaju Tinubu in high esteem. The bond that exists between them dates back to decades of cordial relationship and no peddler of falsehood or group of blackmailers hiding under the guise of politics can put asunder," the statement read in full.

This is coming following the absence of Tinubu at the APC mega rally to herald the Ondo governorship elections.

10 Most Dangerous Cities in The World to Travel

It’s now easier than ever to visit distant locations around the world. Some places, however, are best avoided due to dangerous conditions. Certain dangerous places, on the other hand, are also desirable tourist destinations. If you do decide to visit such places, you should at least be aware of the risks and take sensible precautions. Here, in descending order, are the 10 most dangerous cities in the world

10. Caracas, Venezuela

This is the capital city of Venezuela and it is presently facing a crisis involving drug gangs. Street crimes such as muggings and theft are also common, making this an undesirable destination for most tourists. Many other cities in Venezuela also have high crime rates.

9. Ciudad Juarez, Mexico

Mexico’s problems with drug traffickers are well known and Ciudad Juarez is one of the nation’s most violent cities right now. Police are often employed or paid off by drug gangs, which means that many crimes go unpunished.

8. Cape Town, South Africa

Due to the prevalence of poverty and social unrest in this city, it is suffering from an extremely high crime rate. Although many tourists are drawn to South Africa because of its natural beauty and proximity to nature preserves and other attractions, Cape Town can be a dangerous place. It is possible to enjoy a visit to this city if you avoid the more dangerous sections and don’t travel alone at night.

7. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Many cities in Brazil have very high crime rates, and some are more dangerous than Rio de Janeiro. Yet since Rio is by far the most popular tourist destination in Brazil, it’s worth focusing on here. Rio is actually safer than it was a decade ago, but street crimes are still common in many areas, especially at night. It’s possible to enjoy the resorts and beaches of this city, but common sense precautions should be taken.

6. Guatemala City, Guatemala

Although Guatemala, a Central American nation on the Caribbean, has many tourist attractions, it’s a nation that is plagued with drug violence. It has a high murder rate and other common crimes include street robberies, bus holdups and carjackings. It’s advisable if visiting Guatemala to remain in safer regions and avoid Guatemala City.

5. Acapulco, Mexico

Not long ago, this city was considered a safe and luxurious resort area. While tourism to Acapulco is still popular, drug violence has now made this into a dangerous area. Recent statistics reveal that this city has one of the world’s highest murder rates -142 per 100,000 people. People visiting Acapulco are advised to remain on the property of the resorts where they are staying, as most of the crime occurs in surrounding areas.

4. Baghdad, Iraq

Bombings, gunfire and other violent events are common in Iraq. This country has been on the “do not travel” list for Americans for many years and Baghdad remains a dangerous place. The future of Iraq is extremely uncertain as U.S. troops are departing from the country. This is another war-torn country that is not likely to be safe anytime soon. Since the violence in Baghdad usually consists of unpredictable outbreaks of terrorism, it’s not a place that people should visit without a good reason.

3. Kabul, Afghanistan

This has been one of the most dangerous cities in the world for some time. It is still a war zone, although U.S. troops are gradually being removed from the country. Terrorist attacks, including many bombings are common. Kabul is facing a very uncertain future and will probably be a very dangerous place for the foreseeable future. Like Baghdad, Kabul is a city where violence can occur at any time.

2. Karachi, Pakistan

Pakistan is experiencing a great deal of political unrest, and crime as well as terrorism is rampant. Assassinations are common, as well as suicide bombings and gang warfare. Karachi is one of the centers of this violence and tourists are advised to avoid this city.

1. San Pedro Sula, Honduras

This city has ranked as one of the world’s most violent for several years now. According to many sources, it has the highest homicide rates in the world -169 per 100,000 people. Arms trafficking is a big problem, and illegal firearms are prevalent throughout the city. This is a city that tourists would do well to avoid.

Contract extension: Ronaldo signs with Real Madrid

Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo signed his contract extension with Real Madrid in the Board Room of the Santiago Bernabéu accompanied by President Florentino Pérez. The Portuguese player is linked to the club until 30 June 2021. Following the signing, he received a replica of the Puerta de Alcalá and a shirt with his name and 2021 on the back.

Ramsey - How I have esyablished myself at Arsenal

Aaron Ramsey
Aaron Ramsey can still vividly remember his “surreal” first day at London Colney after signing for Arsenal as a highly-sought after teenager.

The Welsh midfielder joined the club in June 2008 from Cardiff City, and has since gone on to establish himself as a key member of the squad.

A lot has happened in the intervening eight years, but Ramsey says all the changes that have taken place - both on and off the field - have been positive.

“I had to make a decision at the time [of signing for the club],” he told Arsenal Player. “I flew over to see the boss and I knew straight away that this was where I wanted to be, I wanted to be in his plans and I was just buzzing.

“As soon as I came in on the first day I was a bit starstruck with all the faces there, some of the biggest players in world football.

“I am sure they were all thinking, ‘Who is this guy coming in?’ and it was nerve racking going around and introducing yourself, meeting some of the top players in the Premier League.

“It was a bit surreal and I had to pinch myself, but they made me feel welcome straight away and made me feel like they were no different [to anyone else].

“I think I am a bit louder now than I was then!” he added. “You understand how things go on and off the pitch a bit better.

“It only seems like the other day that I was signing for Arsenal, but there has been eight years in between - so it goes before you notice really.

“I left home as a 17-year-old to live on my own and it was quite tough, but I have grown up a lot since then. I suppose football has helped with that and I have started a young family now, so much has happened in those eight years.”

Karius on Klopp, expectations and starting as a striker

karius
Loris Karius has come a long way since his fledgling football career began with him playing as a striker – and the 23-year-old is determined to match the new expectations he is meeting as a Liverpool goalkeeper.

The German joined the club from Mainz in the summer after making almost a century of Bundesliga appearances, and has been between the posts for seven Reds matches.

After featuring in last Sunday’s 6-1 home victory over Watford – which moved Jürgen Klopp’s side to the top of the Premier League – Karius spoke at length with Goal.com about his career development, the manager and much more.

On joining Liverpool…

When I heard Klopp wanted me, I was really excited because it felt like a huge reward after everything I’d been through, and also because I know how hard the manager works for success. I was watching Liverpool already, like many people in Germany, who wanted to follow what he was doing in the Premier League.

You could already see last season the way of playing at the club changed and even though the results now and then weren’t always as good as what people wanted, you could notice what he was building and that the team was stronger. I knew that in the summer, with the time he had to create his team with transfers and pre-season, that he would really transform Liverpool. I believed in everything he told me. I had a really good talk with him, and it was not a hard decision to make.

On adapting to his new team…

There are a lot of differences. Of course, I don’t really get many shots at me, but I don’t really see this as a problem because you always need to be switched on in the game.

Sometimes, especially in the beginning, maybe we would need to play short in a situation where I would never do it at Mainz. I wouldn’t have played the ball because I knew we would struggle to get out of that space. At Liverpool, though, with all the quality and talent we have in the team, we can deal with really tight spaces so I have to remember in my head that it’s possible now, when before it wasn’t.

I need to get used to these kind of changes and it will happen quickly, but that’s why I sometimes still make the wrong choice – I’ll maybe kick the ball long when we could have gone short and it won’t look too good, but as we all develop together, it will become automatic.

For example, against Watford we had a really good mix of play. We had nice build-up from the back, but also went long and got success that way too. The more games I get, the more I understand each player and what it is they really want in each situation and how I can help them. At the start, you don’t really appreciate just how many different things you can do when there’s so much quality in the squad, but the more we try stuff together, the better we will all get.

On the size of the club and expectations…

You actually don’t realise until you’re here how big this club is, followed by millions all over the world, and everyone wants to understandably have an opinion because of their passion.

You can read about it and be told about it, but you only feel it when you get here. In Mainz sometimes when we lost a game, people would say ‘Don’t worry, all good, we’ll do better next time’. Here the expectation is very different, very high and that is good because we expect only the very best for ourselves too. Of course, it is a new experience to have so much coming your way at once, but it is brilliant to have so many supporters everywhere who love the club and want the best for it.
It is motivation for us as players and we must use it. What they expect of me is no less than I expect from myself. I want to be my very best for Liverpool.

On how he became a goalkeeper…

When I started, I was a striker for the first few months. Our goalkeeper didn’t show up once, and the team was asked who wanted to fill in for him. No-one really wanted to, but I thought it would be an interesting challenge, so I agreed to do it. We played in a tournament and I did really well in there, our team looked quite strong and after that when I wanted to return to playing out, the coaches said ‘No, you’re too good in goal so we’re going to keep you there’. From then on, I’ve been a goalkeeper permanently and as I grew in the position, I really enjoyed everything about it.

On working with goalkeeping coach John Achterberg…

It’s very important to have a great bond so you can trust each other, can talk to each other and work on the big and small things together. John is a funny guy, but very serious when it comes to his work. He is so passionate and it’s a good mix, because not only is he a nice person, but in training he demands everything from you.

We have a strong relationship and if there’s something I think I need, I will tell him and he will help me with it, and if there’s something he thinks I need, he lets me know and we discuss everything, which is very healthy.

Succesor Trump and Predecessor Obama to meet at White House

Trump and Obama
President Obama is to welcome his successor Donald Trump to the White House for talks aimed at smoothing over the transition of power.

It could prove a difficult meeting with Mr Trump having questioned Mr Obama's US citizenship and promising to dismantle some of his key policies.

Mr Obama though has said he is "rooting" for Mr Trump after his shock defeat of Hillary Clinton.
Thousands have taken to the streets of major US cities denouncing Mr Trump.

Mr Obama - who for his part had branded Mr Trump "unfit" for office and campaigned against him - urged all Americans to accept the result of Tuesday's election.

"We are now all rooting for his success in uniting and leading the country," he said.
The defeated Mrs Clinton also told supporters Mr Trump had to be given a "chance to lead".

Despite their calls, protesters gathered in several cities across the country. Many chanted: "Not my president."

Trump and Clinton

  • In New York, thousands marched on Trump Tower, attacking his policies on immigration, gay rights and reproductive rights. Fifteen people were arrested, the New York Times reported
  •
  • Protests were largely peaceful but in Oakland, California, some demonstrators smashed shop windows and threw missiles at riot police, who reportedly responded with tear gas
  •
  • A mass anti-Trump rally shut down the key 101 freeway in Los Angeles
  •
  • In Chicago, crowds blocked the entrance to Trump Tower, chanting: "No Trump, No KKK, No Fascists USA"
  •
  • In Portland, Oregon, demonstrators temporarily closed an interstate highway
  •
  • In Washington DC, protesters held a candlelit vigil. Organiser Ben Wikler told the crowd: "We are here because in these darkest moments, we are not alone"
Demonstrations also took place in Philadelphia, Boston, Seattle and San Francisco, among other cities.

In his victory speech in the early hours of Wednesday, Mr Trump vowed to "bind the wounds of division", after an acrimonious election contest, and to be "president for all Americans".

White House spokesman Josh Earnest has insisted Mr Obama will be sincere about ensuring a smooth handover when he meets Mr Trump, although he added: "I'm not saying it's going to be an easy meeting."

With the Republicans holding a majority in both chambers of the US Congress Mr Trump has an easier path to pass his laws and scrap key Obama initiatives like his healthcare reforms.

The president-elect will be accompanied to the White House on Thursday morning (1600 GMT) by his wife, Melania, who will have a meeting with First Lady Michelle Obama.

Mr Obama, who congratulated his successor in a phone call in the early hours of Wednesday, said it was "no secret" that he and Mr Trump had pretty significant differences.

But he added that "we all want what's best for this country" and he was "heartened" by what he heard in Mr Trump's remarks the night before.

The meeting will take place behind closed doors. The two men are then expected to appear together for the cameras in the Oval Office.

Mr Trump's transition team for the 10-week period until inauguration will be led by Chris Christie, the governor of New Jersey.

The president-elect, who has never held elected office, has said his immediate priorities will be restoring the country's infrastructure and doubling its economic growth.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said: "Donald Trump is taking this very seriously," adding that the business mogul's deal-making ability would enable him to quickly "make things happen for the American people".

Protest: anti-Trump protesters take to U.S. cities in thousands

anti-Trump protesters

Demonstrators marched in cities across the United States on Wednesday to protest against Republican Donald Trump's surprise presidential election win, blasting his campaign rhetoric about immigrants, Muslims and other groups.

In New York, thousands filled streets in midtown Manhattan as they made their way to Trump Tower, Trump's gilded home on Fifth Avenue. Hundreds of others gathered at a Manhattan park and shouted "Not my president."

In Los Angeles, protesters sat on the 110 and 101 highway interchange, blocking traffic on one of the city's main arteries as police in riot gear tried to clear them. Some 13 protesters were arrested, a local CBS affiliate reported.

An earlier rally and march in Los Angeles drew more than 5,000 people, many of them high school and college students, local media reported.

A demonstration of more than 6,000 people blocked traffic in Oakland, California, police said. Protesters threw objects at police in riot gear, burned trash in the middle of an intersection, set off fireworks and smashed store front windows.

Police responded by throwing chemical irritants at the protesters, according to a Reuters witness.
Two officers were injured in Oakland and two police squad cars were damaged, Johnna Watson, spokeswoman for the Oakland Police Department told CNN.

In downtown Chicago, an estimated 1,800 people gathered outside the Trump International Hotel and Tower, chanting phrases like "No Trump! No KKK! No racist USA."

Chicago police closed roads in the area, impeding the demonstrators' path. There were no immediate reports of arrests or violence there.

"I'm just really terrified about what is happening in this country," said 22-year-old Adriana Rizzo in Chicago, who was holding a sign that read: "Enjoy your rights while you can."

In Seattle, police responded to a shooting with multiple victims near the scene of anti-Trump protests. Police said it was unrelated to the demonstrations.

Protesters railed against Trump's campaign pledge to build a wall along the border with Mexico to keep immigrants from entering the United States illegally.

Hundreds also gathered in Philadelphia, Boston and Portland, Oregon, on Wednesday evening. In Austin, the Texas capital, about 400 people marched through the streets, police said.

A representative of the Trump campaign did not respond immediately to requests for comment on the protests. Trump said in his victory speech he would be president for all Americans, saying: "It is time for us to come together as one united people."

Earlier this month, his campaign rejected the support of a Ku Klux Klan newspaper and said that "Mr. Trump and his campaign denounces hate in any form."

"DREAMERS" FEAR DEPORTATION

Earlier on Wednesday, some 1,500 students and teachers rallied in the courtyard of Berkeley High School, in a San Francisco Bay Area city known for its liberal politics, before marching toward the campus of the University of California, Berkeley.

Trump a dit l'hôte Jake Tapper.
